What is the Diocese of Southeast Mexico? Southeast Mexico is one of the five dioceses in the Iglesia de México (Mexican Province of the Anglican Communion). It was granted autonomy by General Convention 1997. The Episcopal Church will provide support to the Mexican church for 25 years, with the stipend diminishing at a rate of 4 percent per year.
The Diocese of Southeast Mexico is one of the largest in the worldwide Anglican Communion covering the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Chiapas, almost 25 percent of the land mass of Mexico. This part of Mexico is among the poorest in the nation and it is one of the poorest dioceses in the worldwide Anglican Communion. The largest source of revenue in this area is tourism, but most of the rural areas do not have the more common tourist attractions and cannot access this source of revenue. Other sources of revenue are agriculture, and, in some of the costal area, fishing economies. Although there are several major cities in the diocese, most Anglican churches are in the countryside and are what we would call missions; few are self supporting or even currently capable of being self supporting. |

In November 2001, the 164th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Chicago ratified a resolution of the Commission on Global Ministry, establishing two diocesan companionships, one with Renk (Sudan), the other with the Diocese of Southeast Mexico. In January 2002, representatives of the Diocese of Chicago including Bishop William Persell and John Nachtrieb (who served on the Commission on Global Ministry) traveled to Southeast Mexico to meet Bishop Benito Juarez Martinez and to officially inaugurate the new companionship. In that visit, the Chicago contingency visited 11 congregations in five days, covering approximately 1,000 miles by car. |

Bishop Benito wisely recognizes that self-sufficiency begins with feeding hungry people. Virtually nothing else can be accomplished unless and until this first issue is resolved.
Thus is was Bishop Benito’s top priority to put a herd of cattle in place at the Anglican Center near Tuxtepec. Thanks to your great generosity, the herd has been purchased and is in place at the Anglican Center in Tuxtepec, a medium-size town South of Vera Cruz. |

Short-Term Projects Take Polaroid® pictures of each kid in a Sunday School class. Have each child write her/his name and age next to each picture along with a brief description of their family (including pets). Encourage the kids to include a special message of greeting. Send the poster to Bishop Benito’s office for him to deliver to a congregation in his diocese.

We want to raise funds for a project. How do we contribute money? We want to establish a partnership. How do we get matched up with one? How do we get to Southeast Mexico? Where do we get more information? Can someone come and tell us more? Most immediately and most importantly you can pray for our companions in Southeast Mexico. Our minor differences pale in comparison to what we share with them: the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Talk with your fellow parishioners and friends about a special fundraiser or project for Southeast Mexico. Develop and idea or devise a plan that excites you and your group. Consider forming a church-to-church companionship, either for a medium-term (one year) or long-term (many years) friendship. Decide what excites you and think about what you want to know more about. Then … Contact Deacon John Nachtrieb
… and schedule a visit with your group to explore your ideas and answer your questions. |
