Music at Transfiguration Print E-mail

The music program at Church of the Transfiguration is diverse, creative and grounded in the unique Anglican heritage of music in the Episcopal Church. Our music not only adds beauty to the service but also provides a means for deepening one's spiritual experience.

The church’s choral program currently consists of two choirs; an adult choir and a newly forming youth choir.

The Transfiguration ChoirThe Adult Choir rehearses each Wednesday evening at 7:30 from September through May and sings at the 10am mass each Sunday. This group performs a variety of sacred choral music throughout the year, both in Eucharistic and other liturgical services. The adult choir performs Advent Lessons and Carols and an occasional Choral Evensong with the choir of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lockport. Other collaborative events with Harmony, Hope and Healing have been most successful and will continue in the future.

Since the fall of 2006, A Youth Choir has become part of the Sunday School curriculum. Children, ages 7 through 11 meet with George Tarasuk regularly to learn basic music competency and voice training. The Youth Choir is introduced to singing simple melodies, rounds and two-part pieces that supplement their Sunday School curriculum. The Youth Choir sings at approximately 4 masses throughout the year.

Our primary instrument, a one manual, eight rank Roederer tracker pipe organ (Evanston, Illinois, 1970) was purchased from the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, where it had been used for only a year while their new organ was being built. The organ has six stops: 16' Subbass, 8' Gedackt, 4' Principal, 4' Rohrflöte, 2' Octave, and Mixture III. It has one 61-note manual, 32-note pedals, and a manual-to-pedal coupler.

Transfiguration has two rehearsal pianos, one in the choir loft, and one in Leach Hall; and a three octave set of chimes.
