Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:46

The printed materials for the 2010 Annual Parish Meeting, including agenda, financial reports, stewardship report, budget documents, Vestry and Day Card Board profiles, and a proposed constitutional change are available for download here. Ministry reports are available here, but not included in the printed handouts both in the interest of saving paper and printing costs, and because not all reports were ready at the time of the meeting. Information and reports from the 2009 Annual Parish Meeting are available here.

The Rector and Vestry sponsored a budget meeting at 9 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 17 in Leach Hall to distribute printed copies, answer questions, and hear recommendations from parishioners ahead of the Jan. 31 Annual Parish Meeting when the budget will be submitted to the congregation for approval.

Altar Guild prepares for the sacred worship at each liturgical celebration. The duties of the altar guild are quite varied, as they include the care of not only altar linens but other liturgical items such as the eucharistic vessels, elements, vestments, candles and small furnishings for the altar. Decorations in the church of banners and flowers that are displayed have also been planned by the Altar Guild in order to create an environment appropriate to each occasion.

This includes funerals and weddings.

Centering Prayer Group Print E-mail
Written by Michael Trapp
Sunday, 10 January 2010 14:16
The Left of Center prayer group, over the summer decided to make a name change to end any politically-oriented confusion as to its purpose.   Centering Prayer is a prayer technique designed to lead to contemplative prayer, but since our meetings were not exclusively Centering prayer - we also used Lectio Divino, as well as other meditative approaches - we chose the name Left of Center.  A new name is in the works, as is the structure of the group.  We have taken the last several months off to consider and discuss our group format and focus, wanting to open our spiritual palate to a variety of paths to seeking the Divine Spirit.  If you are interested in meditation, silent prayer and other approaches for discovering God's indwelling Spirit, and would like to participate in the development of this group, please contact Michael Trapp.

Last June, upon the retirement of our beloved Cheryl Ryniak, I stepped into the position of Interim Director of Children and Youth Ministry here at Transfiguration. Since then, I have endeavored to keep our Children and Youth programs running smoothly and I owe a great deal of thanks to Cheryl and to the Children and Youth Ministry Committee (CYMC) for all of their help.

Communications Team Print E-mail
Written by Melinda Moore

The Communications Team – made up of Melinda Moore, Becky Hensley and Shari Schmidt – worked to get the word out to the parish and the community about what’s happening at Transfiguration.

Becky produced Transcripts, while Melinda publicized events through traditional means such as newspapers, public-access cable, bulletin boards at area businesses and at Trinity Christian College and Moraine Valley Community College. Shari used her connections to publicize events through more innovative ways such as Craigslist and other social media. Notices also were sent via e-mail to parishioners.

Daughters of the King – St. Monica’s Chapter Print E-mail
Written by Katherine Hamann

Although our chapter is an integral part of Transfiguration, we’re also members of an international lay order for women, founded in 1885. Women do have a larger role in the church since then, but we’re not a quaint relic of the past. Daughters renew their baptismal vows when they join, and they commit to following a rule of life that focuses on prayer, service, and evangelism. We wear a cross that reminds us of this commitment.

Deacon's Report Print E-mail

In 2009 I served as deacon in 148 liturgies, 100 at Transfiguration and 48 at Church of Our Saviour in Elmhurst. I preached at Transfiguration four times, and presided at 8 services and preached homilies at 19 services in Elmhurst.

I responded to Bishop Lee’s challenge for the Millennium Development Goals to raise funds to provide school uniforms for children who otherwise would not receive an elementary education, and the parish raised over $2100.

I served on two diocesan commissions throughout the year.

Keeping God's People Safe Print E-mail
Written by Sue Burke
Friday, 15 January 2010 10:15

Keeping God’s People Safe training was held on 8.30.09, led by Katherine Hamann and Sue Burke. There were 16 people present.  The training focuses on a proactive approach to illuminating sexual abuse in the church. In order for abuse to occur, there needs to be three elements: perpetrator, victim and environment. As a church we have control over the environment and can act positively to create an environment in which abuse is unlikely to occur. This years’ goal is:

  • Continue training anyone who works with the children as well as any other interested parishioner
  • Form a committee that would write specific policy and procedures, therefore creating a safe environment for our children

The Memorial Garden Committee continues to maintain the garden. Last spring, we refurbished the sprinkler system and planted additional perennials. We also planted annual flowers to augment the color provided by the perennials. We want to thank Kathy Madden and the lay planters and weeders for assisting us with the garden maintenance.

Parishioners who would like more information concerning internment in the garden or the purchase of memorial/commemorative bricks can contact any member of the committee or the church office.

Please join me in thanking the members of the committee, Marianne Dawson, Sharon Fritz and Jan Jaekel, for their ongoing commitment to this project.

Soup Kitchen Ministry Print E-mail

The Transfiguration Soup Kitchen ministry served meals from January through April at the Charles M. Pond Memorial Soup Kitchen in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago.  Average attendance was 55 meals served per visit, for a total of 220 meals.  Menus consisted of a hearty main dish, vegetables, bread and a dessert, all cooked by our own congregation.  I estimate that Transfiguration has served well over 11,000 meals since I started volunteering there in 1989.  We also continued our famous "chocolate milk ministry", something that has given us favored status with the locals who frequent the kitchen.

T-Fig Bad Girls Book Club Print E-mail

This was the year a male parishioner finally got up the nerve to join the Bad Girls Book Club. It was also a year when we read some terrific books and a few less-than-stellar selections. We read everything from fictional expansions on the Garden of Eden story to a tale of a Jesuit space exploration, and we even encountered a talking gorilla. If you like lively conversation, interesting books and spending time with new friends at Transfiguration, this club is for you.

Youth Group Print E-mail

The Senior High Youth group meets weekly during Church School time, and is open to all high school aged youth. Our sessions alternate between general discussions and activities pertinent to this age group, to more didactic material with experiential exercises. This year we are studying and discussing a variety of approaches to developing a relationship with God. Earlier this season we discussed and experienced some Native American approaches to spirituality. This past fall we took our annual outing to Irons Oaks Adventure Center, where we challenged our fears and developed team work skills on the High Ropes Course.
