In 1950, Bishop Conkling of the Diocese of Chicago was petitioned to establish a mission in Palos Park, Illinois. By 1952, the membership stood at 191.

In 1954, the original church was completed on 3.4 wooded acres at the corner of 86th Ave. and 123rd St., nestled in the heart of the Village of Palos Park. Transfiguration Mission became a parish in 1957, followed closely in 1960 by the construction of a permanent rectory on the grounds adjoining the church.

Morning Prayer in the Original Worship SpaceIn 1968, the Rev. Keith Leach was installed as rector of the church, serving in that role until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure, our Deacon, Janet Mackintosh, was ordained as one of the first female priests in our diocese, and Transfiguration had the singular honor of having her ordination at our church. Youth services and committee structures were established to help administer the programs of the church; Conversations on the Bible, conducted by Fr. Leach and Pastor Settledge of the local Lutheran Church, was broadcast on cable television; and female acolytes and vestry members were first permitted, among other events significant to the church community.

In 1985, the church established the Palos Park Episcopal Day Care and Learning Center, and parishioner Henry Townes was ordained Deacon in 1987. In 1990, our fellowship hall was expanded to seat 125, and the space for the Day Care and Learning Center was also increased.

Our next rector, Fr. Paul Lautenschlager began his service in 1992, and served until March of 2001. During his tenure, a strategic plan and mission for the church was established, youth ministry was expanded, annual Parish Missions were conducted, ministry of lay persons in the Eucharist was expanded to include Lectors, Intercessors, and Eucharistic Ministers, and a Memorial Garden was planned and completed. John Nachtrieb, son of a founding family, was ordained as a deacon in 1998. By 1999, the Day Care Center had an enrollment of 109 children and a staff of eleven. The Day Care Center continues to be an on-going outreach activity and a source of income for our church.
